Down on the Southeast side of South Island, there is a protuberance that ends in a narrow cape, strewn with big rocks like nuggets... Nugget Point. A small lighthouse points the tip of the cape and the rough rocks are a sanctuary for sea lions, royal spoonbills and other birds. It is a popular venue for tourists and nature lovers. Nearby there is Roaring Bay, a spot that is favoured by another typical creature of New Zealand, the yellow-eyed pinguin. They are out at sea all day to hunt, but come to rest here at night.
We didn't see the elusive pinguins, but the sea lions were all the more present with some macho demonstrations of strength on the scene below.
