The largest population of bisons in North America
The most impressive inhabitants of Yellowstone are the bisons, that now roam in different parts in big herds. They are not completely wild: you will see that the leader of a herd wears a ribbon to identify him and his gang. Since there are not many predators, the park management has to keep an eye on the size and composition of the herds.
Our first herd: between Madison and Norris
It is a strange sight: cars stopping on the road and patiently waiting
till a sizeable troup has crossed. The animals are used to cars, or they act as if they don't see them - at least as long as nobody has the crazy idea to step out of their car... Rangers warn that more people get hurt in encounters with bison than with bears.
The bisons we saw from close by where in the area between Madison and Norris. The largest herds are to be found in the big valleys, Lamar and Hayden.
Single males (?) wander here and there and sometimes appear quite suddenly in front of your car, or like here, behind the
Soda butte.
