In front of the second southern town of Dunedin lies the Otago Peninsula, the southern bank of a harbour. At the tip of the Otago Peninsula is a nature refuge and museum - well, before that, there already was a albatross colony. The Royal Albatross Centre protects in fact the only albatross colony on a mainland. For all the other colonies the ocean birds with the enormous wingspan choose to have a safe place on some island to look after their young.
Next to the entry of the Otago museum, sea lions also have their resting place. When swimming out into the ocean to find their food, they often encounter orcas that really play in another league than the sea lions. So the sea lions have earned some rest when they make it back to the coast. When you see them sleeping in the grass, they may seem quite harmless, and some nasty people are tempted to annoy them. But beware, these are predators - and anyway, we should respect all plants and animals, whether they can harm us in return or not.
