The world is my home
The first voyage outside
Europe was to Morocco in 1974...
For years afterwards, I
didn't leave Europe. Until, in 1994, a friend at
the theatre talked about going to India...
I developed the taste for travel to far away
countries, the Far East in particular, but also to
the Mediterranean. Between 1995 and 2002, I often
traveled alone, but fortunately also with friends.
Malta and Rhodos I visited on my own. With friends
my favorite destination became Thailand, Vietnam and
Laos. We visited the famous buddhist temples in
Bangkok, the villages of Montagnards, the minority
tribes in NE Thailand, Northern Vietnam and Laos,
the historic sites of the Khmer and Cham
civilisations, and the tropical and subtropical
nature.
When I finally encountered my future spouse, Brazil
became a crucial destination for our voyages. On
December 29th, 2002, I landed in São Paulo to meet
Touché in flesh and blood. We passed our honeymoon
in Bahia, at Barra Grande. In 2004, we returned to
Brazil to visit São Paulo State, Brasilia,
Fortaleza, Jericoacoara
and Salvador. In 2005 we traveled another six weeks
around N.E. Thailand and Laos. We visited a strange
'theme park' near Nong Khai, with the sculptural
explanation of the Wheel
of Life... We also drove a few kilometres into
N.E. Cambodia, to visit another Khmer site, Preah
Vihear✶. In
2007 it was time for Brazil once more. We spent our
holidays in Bahia State: Salvador and the Chapada
Diamantina, and in Brasilia. Saudades brought us
back to Brazil in 2010, when we visited family in
Santos & Brasilia, and made a tour by planes and
autobuses that brought us to the Pantanal, the
Chapada dos Guimarães, Barra do Garças, historic
cities in Minas Gerais and beaches between Macaé and
Rio.
In the mean time, Touché and I spent a few weeks in
the Czech Republic, we visited Paris, Athens and the
Greek islands Paros
and Santorini , Chefchaouen (Morocco), Malaga
and the Alhambra
(Granada, Spain), Normandy and Brittany (France),
Milano (Italy). Smaller trips in Europe brought us
to the Black Forest (S.W. Germany), The High Veluwe,
Texel and Drenthe (Netherlands), Strasbourg
(France), Luxemburg, the Lüneburger Heide and the
Mosel valley in Germany. We like the system of
'trekkershutten' that exists on campings mainly in
the Netherlands and Luxemburg: simple chalets with
four beds and cooking facilities. Otherwise, bed
& breakfast is nice, unless we can go camping.
Next on the agenda are city trips to Barcelona and
Porto.
In Europe, our favourite way of traveling is by car
and going from camping to camping. In other
continents, we stay with friends, or in guesthouses,
pousadas, cheap hostels, as long as they are clean
and have a private bathroom for us. We have equipped
ourselves with a pair of warm sleeping bags, a small
and handy tent that we can put up in a matter of
minutes, a second 'cooking tent' where we can keep
our food stuff and cooking material, and two
portable coolboxes. Everything fits into our trusted
Clio car with sunroof... and off we go. We often
don't do more than 3 to 400 kilometres a day,
because we stop every now and then to make pics, to
have a picnic, to visit some place of interest. The
next destinations that we visited in this way are
Austria and Hungary in June 2008, and Scandinavia in
June 2009, each a trip some 4500 km.
