French influence can be seen around the peninsula. Many streets in the Akaroa village have French names: rue de Malmanche, rue Benoit, rue Balguerie, rue Pompallier, and several shops and houses have a French signboard: Chez La Mer Backpackers, restaurant Ma Maison, La Rochelle Motel, le Petit coin de Paradis cottage...
